HEALTH & INDEPENDENT LIVING SERVICE [HILS]https://hils-uk.org/

Health & Independent Living Service (HILS), established by Herts County Council as a charitable social enterprise, provides a range of caring services to help people stay happy, healthy, and independent in their own home. Help to people’s lives, HILS give support and peace of mind to thousands of Hertfordshire residents, their families and friends.

HILS services include:

Meals on wheels, Nutrition and wellbeing service, Pop-in visits, Community alarms and telecare. Home from hospital packs, Dementia fun clubs, Emergency food packs, Advocacy, and Optician service.

Meals on wheels are available to everyone, 365 days a year. Every visit includes delivery of a hot meal and dessert, along with a caring welfare check, at a subsidised cost per day (or slightly more if you don’t meet the subsidy criteria). Breakfast/Tea packs are also available at an additional charge. You can order meals as a one-off, temporarily, or for as long as you would like them. A medication prompt can also be provided.

Community alarms and telecare support you to live safely and independently in your home. A community alarm is a unit connected wirelessly to a small, water-resistant button worn on your wrist or around your neck. If you need help, it connects you to a Hertfordshire-based control room, 24 hours a day. Telecare equipment can support you at home by alerting someone if you need help. It can also help you to manage your medication, let your family know you’re okay, manage a sensory impairment, and prevent distraction burglaries, scams, and abuse. The Home from Hospital emergency food and grocery pack is a box of essentials given free of charge if you are leaving hospital.

HILS work in partnership to offer a free home eye testing and spectacle fitting service.
