On Saturday 8th August 38 of our members went on our second annual trip to Newmarket races following last year’s successful outing.
The weather was fine and sunny but mercifully not too hot. Leaving Cheshunt at 10.30 we arrived in good time for most people to enjoy a picnic lunch before entering the racecourse itself.
In addition to the racing the day had circus themed-entertainment with acrobats, stilt walkers, a band and an “elephant”.
The racing started at 1.55 and with 7 races was pretty intensive until the final race at 5.25.
On the coach journey from Cheshunt Malcolm gave everyone a brief rundown on the various ways to place bets and also suggested we look out for a young Irish jockey called Billy Loughnane who was in great form having had 7 winners at Newmarket meetings over the previous two days.
Unfortunately, young Billy must have been worn out and managed only one winner on the day – we’ll be in need of a new tipster next year!
Overall, everyone enjoyed the day out and the occasion and despite a few winners spread round the group nobody won enough to come back in a chauffeur-driven Rolls rather than on the coach, but then again everybody also still had their shirt!
