About us
The cycling group continues to attract more cyclists and it is not unusual for us to have 40 riders turn out every week.
Our group meets every Wednesday morning, with some of our groups also riding on Mondays. Owing to the spread of members throughout the borough we presently have seven groups within the three ranges of abilities. All abilities are catered for in the three ability groups. Electric bikes are now present in the group giving those who have them a new lease of cycling life!
If there is a fifth Wednesday in the month, some make a day of it, if the weather is suitable.

The Easy Ride which encourages members to get in the saddle and have a pleasant ride through the Lee Valley Park, at a leisurely pace.
The Moderate Ride offers a ride which although still at a leisurely pace, goes further in miles with fewer stops.
Challenging Ride offers a ride for more adventurous riders who are prepared to go on and off public roads. These rides often include quite steep climbs.
Fifth Wednesday Ride offers a longer ride which lasts until 4pm, with refreshment breaks and lunch along the way.

We want people to be realistic and class themselves as either a Challenger Rider capable of riding for 3hrs on mixed terrain including public roads. Covering at times over 30miles.
Moderate rider capable of riding on some quiet roads willing to tackle hills-even if slowly, and we would aim to cover 20/25 miles in the space of 2 to 2.5 hrs. This would not be competitive and no-one will be left behind.
Easy rider this would be for slower, or less confident riders, willing to ride for 2 to 2.5 hrs trying to avoid public roads and using the Lea Valley Park's extensive track system. Again no-one will be left behind.
All participants must be a member of the U3A
All cyclists MUST wear a cycle helmet
Cycling has low impact on HIPS AND KNEES, so if you fancy exercise, get the bike from the shed, give it a service, check the tyre pressure and join our sociable group.

Fifth Wednesday Ride on 29th May 2024 - Tower Bridge
We were lucky on Wednesday with the weather as our two groups headed for the Tower of London.
Richard and Hazel's group of 12 headed down the Lee, before turning on to the Hertford Cut, and Victoria Park, where they had a break for coffee.
The group led by Paul started at Enfield, and headed close to the Spurs stadium, before riding past the old Arsenal Stadium and then the new one. To see more pictures Read more
U3A OLYMPIC VELODROME EXPERIENCE 2014
In full gladiatorial lycra our cycling group entered the arena of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Velodrome at Stratford on July 2nd 2014. As well as Cheshunt, there were members from the U3As at Broxbourne, Hertford, Lea Valley and Ware.
Riding the Velodrome, on track fixed wheel bikes, and after some instruction and introductory slow circuits, we were let loose to ‘burn rubber’!
With steep banking, particularly at each end, nerves of steel were required to get to the top of the track. It was a truly exhilarating experience for all who attended the one hour session. Photographs of the event are available to view on our table at the monthly meeting or click on Olympic Velodrome 2014 link on right hand side.
London Bike Ride 2nd August 2013
Expertly lead by Richard and Hazel, we had a fantastic ride, thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.
Setting off at 9.30 in slight drizzle we cycled down the Lea tow path to Walthamstow Marshes where we diverted off the tow path and through the marshes on good tracks. Following a coffee stop we carried on to the Olympic Park and turned right along the Hertford Cut to Victoria Park. Through Victoria Park to Regents Canal where we cycled on the tow path to The Lime House Basin. We had a photo by the Thames, see attached, before being taken by Richard on a winding route, incorporating the Ornamental Canal through to St Catherine's Dock, all this done off road except for a couple of sections on very quiet roads, of no more than 200yds each.
Following lunch at St Catherine's Dock, we cycled back to Lime House Basin we rode to Bow Lock along the Lime House Cut. This is where the Lea joins the Thames. Heading North past Three Mills and Old Ford Lock, we diverted into the newly opened North End of the Olympic Park. What a good job they have made, we had afternoon tea and a ride around, before getting back onto the Lea Tow Path and headed for home. With the sun on our backs and a southerly wind we had a very pleasant return trip arriving back at about 4.30pm. The mileage from Cheshunt return was about 41 miles. We got away with only one puncture.
I would certainly say that it must rank as one of the best and interesting rides we have done. So much so that I hope we can offer the ride again before the summer is out!
